Teaching Assistant – Primary

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Primary Teaching Assistant (TA) to join our school community and support pupils aged 5–11 across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Working under the guidance of teaching staff, you will help pupils access learning, encourage active participation in classroom activities, and contribute to a positive, inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide learning support to individual pupils and small groups, including those with and without Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of individual education and behaviour plans.

  • Support pupils’ engagement and participation in classroom and school activities.

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, responding to their individual needs and personalities.

  • Provide clear and constructive feedback to pupils and contribute to teacher assessments and progress updates.

  • Help create an organised, supportive, and safe learning environment, carrying out administrative tasks as required.

  • Promote positive behaviour and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their actions.

  • Support the use of technology in learning, helping pupils develop digital competence and independence.

  • Prepare and organise learning materials and resources.

  • Uphold all school policies relating to safeguarding, child protection, and data protection.

  • Supervise pupils at key transition times, including before/after school and during school trips.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Attributes

  • A sound understanding of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

  • Strong verbal communication and active listening skills, with the ability to build positive rapport with children.

  • Ability to provide tailored support appropriate to pupils’ individual needs.

  • Confidence in monitoring pupil progress and adapting activities to achieve learning outcomes.

  • Ability to give supportive, constructive feedback that boosts pupil confidence and self-esteem.

  • Compassion, empathy, patience, and a commitment to pupil wellbeing.

  • Willingness to engage in ongoing personal and professional development.

  • Competent computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • Professional, reliable, well-presented, and committed to maintaining high standards of ethics and conduct.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of supporting pupils with SEND/ALN.

  • Previous experience working or volunteering in a primary school setting.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs (A*–C / 9–4) including English and Mathematics, or equivalent.

  • Previous experience supporting children of primary school age.

  • Fluent spoken and written English.

  • Successful completion of an enhanced DBS check.

  • Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools.

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.

  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning.

  • Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Certificate.
